Why choose this course?
This qualification is equivalent to one A Level and it has been designed to be part of a typical two-year study programme, alongside A Levels. Applied human biology forms the foundation of the health and health science sectors. The sectors are wide ranging, including nursing, midwifery, allied health and sciences including life sciences, clinical biomedical sciences and physiological sciences.
What will I learn?
The content allows learners to concentrate on the development of their knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science areas, over an extended period. There are four units on this course including Principles of Applied Human Biology, Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Human Biology and Health Issues and Genetics and Genetic Engineering.
Assessment Arrangements
The units are assessed either by external or internal assessment.
• External examinations – all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome.
• Set tasks internally assessed – learners take the assessment during a defined assignment window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.
Some external assessments include a period of preparation using set information. External assessments are available twice a year and students may have the opportunity to resit them.
For internally assessed units, assignments will be completed. One resubmission is allowed per assignment.
Where will it take me?
Further study could be in the form of training alongside employment, an Apprenticeship or higher education. This course supports routes into nursing, midwifery, the allied health sector, life sciences and biomedical sciences. The course also carries UCAS points towards studying a whole raft of different degrees at university which are not necessarily directly linked to biology.
What will I need?
Applied Human Biology is available to students with no previous experience of the study of the subject at GCSE. We would expect students to have four GCSEs at Grade 4, a 5 in English and a 5 in Biology or Combined Science 55.
Additional Information
We encourage all students to read widely and conduct their own research into the topics they are studying. You will be expected to undertake at least 4-6 hours of independent study time per week. There is a wide range of support material available in the Learning Resource Centres and on the course OneNote site. Throughout the year, you will be able to access additional support and opportunities to stretch and challenge you.
