Your journey will being with experimentation and development of essential art and design skills in all the specialist areas we offer. Your Diploma programme will combine nine creative areas by themes, enabling you to discover your interest, including: ceramics, digital, fine art, graphic design, contextual understanding, life drawing, printmaking, textiles and three-dimensional design.

For your second year, you will choose a specialist pathway: Fine Art, Graphic Design, Three-Dimensional Design or Textiles. You could also select Fashion, Jewellery or Photography, to extend your skills and understanding, and assist with the building of your portfolio for a Higher Education degree course, a foundation course or employment. A career within the creative industries could include: painter, printmaker, sculptor, graphics designer, illustrator, textile of fashion designer, photographer, jeweller, ceramicist, model maker, filmmaker or animator and many more related roles.

All your assignments will have broad starting points, allowing you to investigate and produce work based on your individual interests. You will use a visual journal/sketchbook to record and explain your thoughts, ideas and discoveries, and to follow your journey towards your unique outcomes as part of a substantial art and design project. It will enable you to clarify your longer-term goals through your choice of a creative pathway and future.

There are 9 mandatory units.

Unit 1 Introduction to visual language in art and design will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding for the confident application of visual language in support of art and design activities.

Unit 2 Introduction to research skills in art and design will provide you with an introduction to a range of research activities and related skills to support art and design.

Unit 3 Introduction to critical and contextual awareness will provide an awareness of relevant critical and contextual understanding to support all your art and design activities.

Unit 4 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design will provide an introduction to a range of materials, processes and skills necessary to record your experiences and articulate ideas.

Unit 5 An integrated approach to 2D problem solving in art and design.

Unit 6 An integrated approach to 3D problem solving in art and design.

Unit 7 An integrated approach to time-based problem solving in art and design will provide you with opportunities to propose solutions to two-dimensional, three-dimensional and time-based art and design issues.

Unit 8 Developing an art and design project will provide a measure of self directed learning in the development of a substantial art and design project. it will enable you to begin to clarify your longer-term goals through your choice of an art and design activity in greater depth.

Unit 9 Opportunities for progression in art and design will provide you with a coherent sequence of learning as an introduction to a range of progression routes available within art and design education and related employment.

Units 1-7 & 9 will be internally assessed and internally moderated against the assessment criteria and Unit 8 will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated.

The Art Department is supportive, ambitious and hardworking. Achievement in this subject relies heavily on your attendance, punctuality and commitment to learning, both independently and within lectures.

You will be encouraged to try a broad range of activities and approaches, which you will refine to suit your individual interests, acquiring and developing specialist skills in your chosen pathway.

Independent work is fundamental to your course; using your time outside the studio is essential. Your ongoing work will be assessed in lessons through focused 1:1 discussion, to review your progress within reflective, thoughtful, analytical and critical evaluation and annotation. You will work towards the development of outcomes, through recording, use of technical skills and conceptual refinement of visual problem solving.

You will also be assessed against how your research of art, craft, design, media and technologies in contemporary and past societies and cultures improves your own understanding, practice and ambitions.

Discussions and presentations are a vital part of our assessment process and you will be expected to contribute to these during your lessons.

Your independent practice will be supported through workshops, tasks, worksheets and other guides available through our Sharepoint course. We also provide you with further support through use of Pinterest and visits to museums and galleries both locally and nationally to support your work.

In completing this qualification you will be able to progress onto further study, training, or employment and this will The Extended Diploma will provide you with the opportunity to utilise and develop broad, transferable skills, encouraging your personal and professional development. Progression to a Higher Education degree course is usual, allowing direct access to courses such as: Fine Art, Illustration, Interior Design, Fashion, Architecture, History of Art, Film, Prosthetics and Theatrical Make Up, Therapy and Education.

The UAL Extended Diploma is included in the UCAS tariff and attracts the following points: Pass 180, Merit 280 and Distinction 420 points.

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above or a Level 2 Diploma in appropriate subjects (to include English Language or Literature and/or mathematics at grade 4).
