In a world where visual communication is ever expanding, the ability to produce informed, creative and thought provoking imagery is highly valued. Businesses and organisations need eye catching imagery to promote their brand or cause across a range of digital and print platforms.

If you enjoy creating photographic images and are interested in learning how you can turn your passion into a career, this course will challenge you creatively, technically and conceptually whilst developing the skills to succeed in a range of visual based career roles. You will have the opportunity to engage in projects that encourage creativity, investigation and analysis as a means of developing technical and expressive skills.

You will learn a broad range of analogue and digital photographic skills using the darkroom, an industry standard studio and professional software. You will also be introduced to a range of theoretical perspectives which influence the development of image making. This will encourage you to consider how photography is relevant to wider creative practices as well as its links to political, social and cultural discourses. Divided across 6 units, the course will allow you to apply your skills to a range of contexts including advertising, fashion photography and fine art, whilst enabling you to make independent creative decisions to replicate the demands of industry.

The course is entirely assessed through coursework. You will complete 3 units per year. Unit 3 determines your grade for the first-year diploma. Unit 6 determines your grade for the 2-year extended diploma.

Camera equipment is available to loan from the department, but some students opt to use their own; we recommend Canon models as they will be compatible with the college inventory. You will have to provide film and photographic paper together with any specialist materials you may wish to use; most of which are available at our college shop. You will be allocated some initial printing credit; however, you must be prepared for expenditure of about £30 per term. The College provides all processing chemicals, printing equipment, and specialist equipment such as studio lighting and tripods.

This Extended Diploma is designed to develop your creative skills with photography as well as your wider visual awareness. Completion of this course usually results in students going to university to study courses aimed at working within photography and the wider creative industries. Completion of this course allows access to a range of creative courses including photography, documentary photography, graphic design, film and moving image production and arts education. Students have also gone on to study subjects including events management, sociology and criminology.

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above or a Level 2 Diploma in appropriate subjects (to include English Language or Literature and/or mathematics at grade 4 or above). You should provide suitable evidence of your learning and achievement ideally in the form of a portfolio of work.
