Jonny Goodhew - History & Politics Lecturer

Jonny teaches History and Politics at Callywith College and is also the Oxbridge Coordinator where he helps support students who are applying to Oxford and Cambridge University.

What is your background in education?

I studied Politics with Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University in 2014, I then did my PGCE in Secondary Education (specialising in History) from University of Hull in 2015.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

I really like thinking and talking about history and politics and having the opportunity to do it as a job is too good to miss! 

What does your role involve?

I teach the History and the Politics A Level courses here, I am also the Oxford and Cambridge Coordinator so I help students navigate the complex and challenging process of applying to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. 

What about working at Callywith College do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy working with great colleagues and friends in the Humanities and Social Sciences department and beyond.

What one thing about you might surprise people?

I'm the Callywith Quiz Master, alongside Huw Williams we do the staff quiz nights and compere staff team building nights.

When you’re not working, what is your favourite thing to do?

In my spare time, I play 5-a-side football and occasionally watch Plymouth Argyle on a Saturday.

What advice would you give students considering applying for History or Politics at Callywith? 

Read as much as you can, keep up to speed with the news, not just mainstream legacy news - BBC, The Guardian, The Times, but look also at smaller news outlets like Private Eye, Vice News, Novara Media and Huffington Post.
