Callywith College is seeking a highly skilled and values‑driven Head of Governance to join our team and play a pivotal role in ensuring excellence in governance, compliance, and strategic oversight.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with significant experience in the education sector, perhaps a recently retired senior leader, an experienced governance or compliance professional, or someone seeking a meaningful role with a reduced working pattern. Working an average of 15 flexible hours per week, this position offers the chance to make a substantial impact while maintaining excellent work–life balance.

About the Role

The Head of Governance serves as the conscience of the college, providing independent, high‑quality advice to the Board of Trustees, ensuring we meet our statutory responsibilities, and supporting the strategic development of the college.

Role Profile

You will work closely with the Chair of the Trust, the Principal, Trustees, and the Senior Management Team to:

  • Promote and uphold the highest standards of governance
  • Provide expert guidance on statutory, regulatory and ethical matters
  • Support the effective operation of the Board and its committees
  • Ensure high‑quality papers, minutes and reporting
  • Oversee governance‑related audit, assurance and risk
  • Support Trustee recruitment, engagement and development
  • Facilitate strategic decision‑making and corporate documentation
  • This is a senior, autonomous role and a statutory appointment within the Trust.

You will bring:

  • Strong administrative and organisational skills
  • Significant understanding of corporate governance
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with senior leaders
  • Integrity, impartiality and sound judgement
  • The ability to work strategically and manage complex information
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and digital platforms
  • Flexibility to attend evening meetings and occasional travel locally
  • Desirable qualifications include a relevant degree or professional qualification (e.g. CGI/ICSA, law, audit, business management), though equivalent experience is equally valued.
