Former A Level Politics, Psychology and Spanish student, Chase, has recently achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Jim Sturman KC Mooting Competition 2025 alongside his partner. The prestigious advocacy competition is organised by the University of Reading, where Chase is currently in his second year studying Law.
The event, held in the Supreme Court in London and judged by two leading barristers specialising in crime, aims to inspire and prepare the next generation of legal professionals. Mooting involves students undertaking legal research and presenting oral arguments in simulated court proceedings.
Chase, who aspires to qualify as a barrister specialising in both serious and financial crime, and who also attended Callywith’s Law Academy, reflected: “Callywith opened opportunities to interact with the justice system. Law Lecturer Charlotte, in particular, connected me with HHJ Simon Carr at Truro Crown Court. Shadowing a judge was an excellent opportunity to observe, first-hand, the fascinating and fast-paced nature of courtroom advocacy. I highly recommend spending some time in the courts to any students who are considering a career in law, whether as a Solicitor or Barrister. It provides great material for interviews and hopefully furthers the interest."
Chase added: “The Young Citizens Bar Mock Trial that Callywith’s Law Academy participates in is also a brilliant opportunity for students to engage with advocacy, and experiment with presenting legal arguments in a sophisticated and persuasive style. I would highly recommend this to students who are considering practising law.”
