A Level student Olivia Wins Devon Young Farmers Junior Member of the Year Award

A Level Business, Maths and Fine Art student Olivia Davies has recently won the Devon Young Farmers Junior Member of the Year Award.

Olivia, who is a member of Buckland Brewer Young Farmers and attended the county round of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers' Awards at Barnstaple Theatre last week, shared: “To enter the awards, I had to compete in a group round by handing in a synopsis form of all my achievements that I have done within my club which gets marked, I then did a formal presentation in front of a panel of judges and answered their questions.

“I won the group round and then went to compete at Devon County round doing the same, but with fiercer competition, which I went onto win. The next round is in Weymouth competing for Devon at the South West area weekend in Weymouth at the beginning of March, which is a huge honour! It will be the same thing, but everything will be harder, with more difficult young farmer knowledge questions and judged more harshly but I’m looking forward to the experience as this will definitely help me in the future.

“The judges said that what truly made me stand out among the other contestants was my passion for young farmers and the future they see me having with them. I also competed in the county round of entertainments that day, playing the doctor/fitness instructor in Buckland Brewers performance, as well as performing in their panto last year. I helped build and raise money through carnival floats, entered competitions into tarka group rally and Devon county show and I attended many young farmer events. I was also asked about experiences outside of young farmers and I was proud to say I have had the chance to fly a grob tutor 115E when I was at Air Cadets, I am also doing bronze DofE.

“Along with the award, I also won a travel scholarship giving me the opportunity to go to another country for a week full of learning the culture, traditions, and way of life for citizens. This should also be an amazing experience and enjoyable trip.

“I am so happy to have won the award as it was very unexpected for me with great competition. My club are overwhelmingly proud of me and are going to be cheering me on in the next round.”
Everyone at the College are really proud of Olivia's acheivements so far and wish her luck in the South West round.
