From zero to over 1100 in two years
Callywith College has seen an explosion in student numbers as the population grows to over 1100 students.
Principal Jon Grey is thrilled at the impressive increase in student numbers just two years after opening: “I am absolutely delighted that we now have nearly 1100 students at Callywith studying a wide range of vocational courses and A level courses,” he said.
The dramatic rise in student numbers has created many new jobs at the Bodmin-based College, for both teaching and support staff. Many of the new staff have moved from Truro & Penwith College, which opened Callywith in September 2017 to meet the overwhelming demand for places at the College.
Lauren Brown chose to study A Levels in Physics, Chemistry and Maths at Callywith College this year. Lauren is enjoying the start of term, saying: “I’m enjoying all of my subjects as they are specific to the degree I want to achieve. I’m reassured by the constant support and passion that goes into the Callywith teaching that lets me stay engaged in my courses to the fullest extent.”
Callywith Chair David Walrond said: “We always knew there was huge demand for tertiary college provision in the area, but the sheer speed with which Callywith College has become the post-16 provider of choice for 1100 students is remarkable. Our next challenge will be how to deal with the growing demand for places exceeding capacity on the site. That day looks set to arrive far sooner than we had expected.
“Trustees are therefore exploring options for increasing the capacity of Callywith and ensuring in particular that it can extend its offer into the new technical and vocational curriculum for which there is strong local learner and employer demand. Our new prospectus provides the next opportunity for students to join us and be part of the College community, a College built to deliver the outstanding Truro & Penwith College experience, with outstanding results and an exciting learning environment.”
With an excellent start to the term and both first and second year students enjoying College life, Callywith College is looking forward to another outstanding year.
