UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts is a professionally focused course designed for students with a strong interest in acting. With an emphasis on both stage and screen performance, the programme develops core acting techniques, voice, movement, character development and script work through a range of practical projects and live productions.

Students will also have opportunities to develop their singing and vocal performance skills through ensemble and solo work, broadening their experience and supporting a wider range of progression opportunities.

The course provides dedicated support with university, conservatoire and drama school applications, including guidance on monologue selection, audition preparation, self-taping and professional audition practices. Learners will develop the confidence, creativity and versatility required to progress into further training or employment within the performing arts industry.

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the performing arts industry, with a clear emphasis on developing the craft of acting. Students will build a strong foundation in character development, script analysis and performance techniques across a variety of styles, genres and performance contexts. 

Through intensive, hands-on training, learners will refine their vocal, physical and emotional expressiveness to create authentic and engaging performances. Students will explore a range of approaches to acting, rehearsal and character development while learning how to communicate effectively with an audience. 

Alongside acting, students will develop their singing and vocal performance skills through practical ensemble and individual activities. This supports vocal confidence, musicality, storytelling and the ability to combine character with song. 

The course also introduces the specialist demands of screen acting, equipping students with the skills to adapt their performances for camera. Learners will develop experience in self-taping, working with screen scripts, responding to direction and understanding how performance choices are affected by framing, shot size and continuity. 

Guided by a dedicated team of experienced practitioners, students will also gain insight into the wider performing arts industry. This includes audition techniques, CV and headshot development, progression planning and opportunities to work with visiting actors, directors, theatre companies, technicians and higher education providers.

The course is structured around twelve units delivered over two years, providing a balance of practical and theoretical learning. Assessment is carried out through portfolios of evidence, written assignments, rehearsal documentation, recorded reflections and practical performance tasks.

Students will take part in a range of productions and performance projects throughout the programme. At the end of each academic year, learners will contribute to a full-scale production that forms a major part of their final assessment and allows them to apply their skills within a professional performance environment.

Assessment is based on students’ development throughout the creative process, including their research, planning, problem-solving, practical skills, collaboration, performance and evaluation. 

The Extended Diploma in Performing Arts provides a strong foundation for progression into higher education, including degree or diploma courses at universities, drama schools, conservatoires and specialist performing arts institutions.

Students may choose to progress into areas including Acting, Musical Theatre, Screen Acting, Contemporary Performance, Theatre-Making, Directing or Performing Arts. The course also supports progression into related fields such as Media, Journalism, Events Management and Education.

For students choosing not to continue into higher education, the qualification provides preparation for employment, apprenticeships and entry-level opportunities within the creative industries. This may include work in performance, theatre, film, television, arts administration, front of house, community arts or educational support.

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4, including a grade 4 in English Language or Literature and/or Maths. 

Whilst it is possible to re-take GCSE English and Maths at Callywith College, students can only study one of these subjects alongside our Level 3 courses. Therefore, all students must have at least one grade 4 in English or Maths at the point of enrolment. Other course-specific entry requirements may apply.
