UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts is a professionally focused course designed for students with a passion for the technical and production side of performance. Through practical projects and live productions, students gain experience in lighting, sound, stage management, set design and construction, audio visual technology and production management. 

Working as part of a professional production team, learners take responsibility for designing, building and operating productions across a variety of performances and events. The course develops the practical, creative and organisational skills required by today's theatre and live events industries, while providing valuable opportunities to work alongside performers and visiting industry professionals.

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the technical theatre and live events industry, with a strong emphasis on developing practical production skills. Students will build experience in lighting design and operation, sound engineering, stage management, scenic construction, production management, audio visual technology and digital media. 

Through hands-on training and live production work, learners will gain confidence using industry-standard equipment while developing teamwork, communication, problem-solving and leadership skills. Alongside practical production experience, students will explore health and safety, technical design, production planning and professional working practices, preparing them for the demands of a career in the creative industries.

The course is structured around twelve units delivered over two years, combining practical projects with professional production experience. Assessment is carried out through portfolios of evidence, production documentation, technical demonstrations, practical assessments and reflective evaluations. 

Students will work as part of the technical team for a range of live performances and events, taking responsibility for the planning, preparation and operation of productions. These practical experiences form a significant part of the final assessment and provide valuable industry-relevant experience. 

The Extended Diploma in Production Arts provides an excellent foundation for progression into higher education, including degree or diploma courses in Technical Theatre, Production Arts, Stage Management, Lighting Design, Sound Engineering, Live Events Production, Theatre Design or Event Management. 

The qualification also prepares students for apprenticeships and employment within theatres, touring productions, festivals, concert venues, television, film and the wider live events industry. Career opportunities include lighting technician, sound technician, stage manager, production manager, set constructor, venue technician and audio visual specialist. 

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 including a 4 in English (Language or Literature) and/or Maths. 

Whilst it is possible to re-take GCSE English and Maths at Callywith College, students can only study one of these subjects alongside our Level 3 courses and therefore all students must have at least one grade 4 in English or Maths at the point of enrolment (other course specific entry requirements apply). 

Applicants should have an enthusiasm for theatre, live events and backstage production. Previous technical experience is beneficial but not essential, as all practical skills are developed throughout the course.
