Under the Education Act 1997, all students are entitled to:

  • Find out about technical education and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
  • To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships - through careers events, visits, presentations, group discussions, drop-in sessions and taster events.
  • To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Our personal development tutorial programme helps prepare and develop students for their current and future lives and includes an extensive careers education component. Students are introduced to the wide range of websites and other resources available, to help them research occupational sectors and job roles of interest. A broad range of speakers are invited to talk to the students about post-18 opportunities, including higher education, apprenticeships, jobs and gap years. Students are encouraged to research and evaluate all the pathways open to them.

All curriculum areas organise careers related visits, speakers, workshops and other activities. This is to help students understand and appreciate the relevance of the subject and provides them with an insight into different occupational roles. Every effort is made to challenge stereotypical views.

A wide range of off-timetable careers activities are arranged, including:

Destinations Day 1 – for Year 1 students is late in the autumn term.  Students choose six talks or workshops from those delivered by representatives of over seventy businesses and organisations.  The aim of the day is to give students the opportunity to find out more about different job roles in a wide range of sectors, local employers and alternative post-18 pathways.

Destinations Day 2 – for Year 2 students is right at the start of the autumn term.  Students choose four talks or workshops from those delivered by representatives of over forty businesses and organisations.  Universities and employers explain their application and selection process and give advice to students on how to be successful.

Sector Networking Lunches – eleven sector networking lunches are being run in 2024/25 (see calendar of events below). Students get the opportunity to network with six to eight specialists working in a broad sector. Students can attend lunches for all the sectors they are interested in.

Meet the Alumni Apprentices – students can choose to attend this lunchtime session.  Each participant talks about their apprenticeship including why they chose this route.  Students can then talk to the apprentice or apprentices in the job role or roles they are most interested in.

University Taster Days and Visits – Year 1 students can attend the University of Exeter’s ‘Subject Taster Day’ in the spring term.  Subject areas organise visits to other local universities.

Higher Education Fair – students have the opportunity to meet representatives of over sixty universities and higher education institutions.  Apprenticeship training providers and employers also attend this event.

Industry Immersion – all first-year students will be required to arrange and complete a week’s industry immersion placement at the end of the summer term. The process is supported by your Personal Development Tutor and the Destinations Team.
